Ergonomic Workplace Assessments

Your questions answered

What is an Ergonomic Workplace Assessment?

An Ergonomic Workplace Assessment looks at how your working environment, equipment and daily tasks affect your body. The aim is to identify potential sources of discomfort or strain and recommend practical changes to help you work more comfortably and safely.

Assessments can be useful for people working in offices, from home or in other working environments where posture, repetitive movements or prolonged positions may contribute to physical discomfort.

Why might I need a Workplace Assessment?

Spending long periods sitting, working at a poorly adjusted desk or repeatedly performing the same movements can contribute to discomfort in the neck, back, shoulders, wrists and other areas of the body.

An assessment can help identify factors that may be contributing to these problems and provide practical advice to improve your working setup. It can also be useful if you are returning to work following an injury or experiencing difficulties carrying out your usual duties.

What will my assessor look at?

This will depend on your role and individual circumstances, but an assessment may include:

  • Chair and seating: Adjusting your seat height, back support and sitting position.

  • Desk and workstation layout: Making sure your equipment is positioned appropriately.

  • Screen positioning: Reviewing monitor height, distance and placement.

  • Keyboard and mouse: Considering positioning and ease of use.

  • Posture and movement: Discussing how you sit, stand and move during the working day.

  • Working habits: Identifying opportunities to take movement breaks and vary your position.

  • Individual needs: Considering existing discomfort, physical limitations or a return to work following injury.

The aim is to provide recommendations that are practical for your specific role rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
